In a significant move towards environmental stewardship, Nyeri Water and Sanitation Company (NYEWASCO) today conducted a major tree-planting exercise at Nyeri Hill, successfully planting 1,000 indigenous trees. This initiative demonstrates NYEWASCO’s commitment to environmental conservation, aligning with the company’s Strategic Plan 2021/2022 – 2026/2027, objective 6.5: “Support Environment Conservation.” The company has set an ambitious target of planting 12,000 trees in 2025.

The initiative was spearheaded by key members of NYEWASCO’s management team, with Chief Manager Technical Services, Eng. James Ngunjiri, and Chief Manager Finance & Corporate Services, CPA Rose Gitahi, leading from the front. Their presence and active participation, alongside the enthusiastic involvement of NYEWASCO staff members, demonstrated the company’s top-down commitment to environmental conservation.

The choice to plant indigenous trees is particularly significant, as these native species are well-adapted to the local climate and soil conditions, requiring less maintenance while providing maximum environmental benefits. These trees will play a crucial role in preserving local biodiversity, enhancing soil conservation, protecting water catchment areas, and supporting local wildlife ecosystems.

With this successful planting of 1,000 trees, NYEWASCO has taken an important first step toward its 2025 target. The company’s commitment to “growing for a greener future” serves as an inspiration and a reminder that environmental conservation is a collective responsibility that benefits both current and future generations.
